The Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law (GDATL) provides individuals of all levels with the expertise in Australian tax law to provide effective professional tax advice, and undertake skilled tax work across a range of contexts. It is particularly suited to recent graduates or qualifies accountants who wish to advance their technical and practical skills, specifically in Australian tax law while obtaining an academic qualification.

The Australian tax system is evolving on an unprecedented scale. Issues such as disruptive technology, borderless trade, and a more informed public will continue to challenge you as a tax professional, in new and different ways.

Completing this program enables you to take a practical approach to developing key skills in the fundamentals of tax, advanced tax topics and, depending the electives chosen, topics in Australian commerical law or certain specialist tax areas.

Admission requirements

A Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law candidate will: 

  • 1. hold current membership of The Tax Institute. (A discounted membership is available at the time of enrolment for all new members which expires on 30 June following the enrolment. Find out more about membership benefits and resources. 
  • 2. hold an Australian degree or diploma in:
    • a. accounting; or
    • b. finance; or
    • c. commerce; or
    • c. accounting; or
    • d. law (with tax or commercial law subjects). 
  • 3. meet minimum English language requirements, if the language of instruction for your 6 years of secondary education was not English.

There are alternative entry methods to the Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law which include:

  • 1. Demonstrating at least 3 years relevant Australian tax or tax law experience in the last 5 years; OR
  • 2. Enrolling in, and successfully completing the ATL001 CTA1 Foundations and ATL002 CommLaw1 Australian Legal Systems as single subjects; OR
  • 3. If minimum English language requirements are satisfied, successfully completing the assessemnts for ATL001 CTA1 Foundations or ATL002 CommLaw1 Australian Legal Systems.

Elective Subjects

Three of the six elective* subjects are required to complete the program.

*Completion of the CTA3 Advisory subject may be credited as an elective for the Graduate Diploma.

Certain combinations of subject enrolments, uo to two subjects per study period, are permitted. Recognition for prior learning (for up to two) and Advanced standing may be available for up to three subjects in total. It is therefore possible to complet the program in a shorter time-fra. 

Recognition of prior learning and advanced standing

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) 

RPL is a process for providing candidates credit for learning or qualifications completed before your enrolment with The Tax Institute. 

To apply for RPL (fee $165), please complete the RPL form. Evidence of your qualifications will need to be provided with this application. 

Advanced standing 

Advanced standing is a process of transferring credits from subjects you have previously completed with The Tax Institute. To apply for advanced standing (no fee applies), please complete the advanced standing form.
