Advocacy

Advocacy is one of the three key strategic pillars that is part of the new vision and strategy for The Tax Institute.

Our dedicated Tax Policy and Advocacy team supports our goal to be the leading forum for the tax community in Australia. TTI is a leading voice in tax policy and advocacy matters and we are proud to have our voice heard. Key areas of advocacy are informed by the views of our expert members.

Advocacy activites

Consultative - Key Stakeholders

Our team regularly engages with key influential stakeholders including Treasury, the Australian Taxation Office, the Board of Taxation, the Inspector-General of Taxation, the Tax Practitioners Board, Parliamentary Committees and the various state and territory revenue offices. The team advocates for reforms to our tax system and influences key stakeholders through an extensive consultation network. Please refer to the TTI's submissions here.

Communications - Media, Social Media, Products

Members are kept informed of the tax policy and advocacy work of The Tax Institute through its premier publications of TaxVine and a number of journals including, The Taxation in Australia journal. The team also presents updates to members at flagship events around the country.

The team regularly issues media releases on key tax issues. Senior Tax Counsel, Professor Robert Deutsch, CTA, Senior Advocate, Robyn Jacobson, CTA, and Andrew Mills, CTA (Life) Director of Tax Policy and Technical, are regularly invited to provide media commentary on a wide variety of topical tax issues. Here is a link to our media coverage.

Member Engagement

The Tax Policy and Advocacy team are also committed to understanding the needs of our members to better provide them with a tailored advocacy experience. The work of the Tax Policy and Advocacy team is greatly supported by our network of National Technical Committees. The Committees are comprised of volunteer TTI expert members who provide invaluable input in the form of technical assistance, practical guidance and industry experience which form the foundation of the Institute’s views. Contributions via these specialist technical committees ensure that member concerns with tax policy, law and administration resulting from issues arising in day-to-day practice are represented at the highest levels.

Our National Technical Committees are:

  • Dispute Resolution
  • FBT & Employment taxes
  • GST
  • Large Business & International
  • Not-for-profit
  • SME & Tax Practitioner
  • Superannuation.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer member of any of these committees they are reviewed annually. Please let us know which area you are particularly interested in and email your bio or resume to us at: taxpolicy@taxinstitute.com.au
