Publication date: 19 Mar 15 | Source: THE TAX INSTITUTE

19 March 2015:   The Tax Institute welcomes the ATO’s release of its Reinventing the ATO blueprint announced at the Institute’s 30th National Convention today on the Gold Coast.

Commissioner of Taxation, Chris Jordan AO, said the blueprint describes the kind of experience that Australians want to have when they deal with the ATO, with an emphasis on ease-of-use, efficiency and removing unnecessary and burdensome reporting and regulations.

The Tax Institute’s President, Stephen Healey, said: “Tax professionals welcome the release of the ATO’s official plan to improve its operations and processes.

“There is significant work to be done to alleviate the tax compliance burden on Australian businesses and consumers.

“It’s pleasing to see the Commissioner taking a proactive approach in this area by introducing initiatives such as issuing ‘OK Letters’ to many taxpayers to confirm that their 2015 tax return is closed from further compliance activity.

“We also look forward to partnering with the ATO to build confidence in the tax system in key areas highlighted by the Commissioner such as dispute resolution and BEPS.

“The Tax Institute remains committed to a simpler, fairer tax system, and this announcement from the Commissioner today shows the ATO is serious about its role in helping achieve this,” Mr Healey concluded.

The Tax Institute’s National Convention, Australia’s premier tax conference, concludes tomorrow with an address from Federal Treasurer, the Hon. Joe Hockey, MP.
