NSW Treasurer advocates for tax reform at The Tax Summit

SYDNEY, 11th March, 2020: The Tax Summit, Australia’s biggest convention for the tax and accounting profession, began today at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour.

The NSW Treasurer, the Hon. Dominic Perrottet MP officially opened the Summit by advocating for the need for structural tax reform. The NSW Treasurer pointed out we haven’t seen major structural tax reform since the Hawke and Keating Governments, or substantial reform since the GST. 

In response, The Tax Institute’s President, Peter Godber said “Tax reform is vital. The system needs to be simplified to ensure that it is workable into the future. The Tax Institute will continue to advocate for the simplification of the tax system.”

“The Tax Summit is a platform to reopen the dialogue for tax reform,” said Mr Godber. “The theme of the Summit is Now and When. It is future-focused. It is very important for us to influence policy and to stand up for issues that require advocacy on behalf of our members now and in the future.”

As the regulatory landscape continues to unfold, Mr Godber emphasised The Tax Institute remains committed to be increasingly alert for opportunities to actively engage with key regulator and stakeholder bodies in the tax community.

“We want to make sure that our voice is not only heard, but that our contribution is proactive,” he added. “This year for example, we will have continuing discussion on the future of the tax profession, the review of the Tax Practitioners Board, globally important changes to the law, and ongoing developments of importance for local practitioners in areas of interpretation and practice  that never seem to go away.”

“There is a lot to do for us to continue to improve our tax system, and we will play our part in that as well. I will be encouraging all members to actively engage in our activities. This is what keeps The Tax Institute vibrant and relevant.”

The Tax Institute praised the over 1400 delegates coming together to celebrate the diversity of the tax profession through connection at the Summit. The Tax Summit will continue until this Friday afternoon.
