President of The Tax Institute announces new vision and strategy

The President of The Tax Institute, Tracey Rens CTA, today announced a new vision and strategy for the organisation.

Delivering the opening address at the Institute’s National Convention in Cairns, Ms Rens said that The Tax Institute is primed to play an even more important role in shaping the future of the tax profession in Australia.

“Into the future, to an even greater degree, The Tax Institute will fulfil its responsibility of being a voice of its members, and of the wider tax community,” Ms Rens said.

“To this end, our National Council and executive team has undertaken a major strategic review to establish a vision statement that articulates our identity, activities and purpose. It also identified key strategic objectives, that, in a practical sense, provide a roadmap that will enable us to fulfil the promise of our future.”

The vision statement is as follows:

The Tax Institute is the leading forum for the tax community in Australia. We are committed to representing our members, shaping the future of the tax profession and continuous improvement of the tax system for the benefit of all, through the advancement of knowledge, support for members and advocacy.

The strategic objectives include implementing effective governance systems, maximising tax community reach, providing an ideal member experience, advancing knowledge, advocating for a better tax system and supporting employees and volunteers.

“Together, our vision and our strategic objectives reflect The Tax Institute’s determination to play a central role in shaping the future of the tax profession and in the future development of the Australian taxation system,” Ms Rens said.

The Tax Institute’s National Convention began today at the Cairns Convention Centre and will continue until Friday afternoon.

The Convention is the Institute’s premier annual event. It will provide outstanding technical content over three days, with key sessions looking at how tax professionals have worked with recent changes in tax law and policy.

Presenters from the Australian Taxation Office, including Commissioner Chris Jordan AO, will also offer their perspectives.

Closing out the Convention will be Tony Slater QC, who will look at the future of tax in Australia.

The Gala Dinner, on Thursday evening, will feature the announcement of the Tax Adviser of the Year award winners. Awards will be given in the categories of Chartered Tax Adviser of the Year, Corporate Tax Adviser of the Year, SME Tax Adviser of the Year, and Emerging Tax Star.

The winner in this last category will also receive the Gordon Cooper Memorial Scholarship, which will entitle the Emerging Tax Star to participate in the Institute’s Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law at no cost.
